For the past few years, the Mar Thoma community in Northwest Houston and the surrounding areas were actively thinking about establishing a Mar Thoma worship community in the Northwest quadrant of the Greater Houston area. Under the joint efforts of North Houston Prayer Group of Trinity MTC and Tabor prayer group of Immanuel MTC, there have been several deliberations and had taken preliminary actions, with the support and knowledge of the Diocesan Bishop, towards that formation of a worship service.
On February 11, 2018, a meeting of the Northwest Houston and the surrounding area Mar Thoma members of Trinity MTC and Immanuel MTC were held at the residence of Mr. Thomas Chris Cherian to discuss further the feasibility of forming a Mar Thoma congregation in Northwest quadrant and surrounding areas of greater Houston. Approximately 80 people participated in the meeting along with Very Rev. Cherian Thomas, Rev. Johnson Thomas Unnithan (Vicar- Immanuel MTC), Rev. Mathews Philip (Vicar- Trinity MTC), Rev. Abraham Varghese (associate Vicar - Immanuel MTC) and Rev. Philip Philip Associate Vicar – Trinity MTC). The meeting elected an Ad hoc Committee to explore the formation of a new worshipping community in the Northwest and surrounding parts of Greater Houston area.
On February 18, 2018, A meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee held at the Residence of Mr. Roy Mathew, has resolved to collect the signatures of the interested families for the formation of the Congregation and to find a suitable place for worship at a central location. The sub-committee entrusted with finding the worship place has evaluated and visited several potential locations for the regular worship of the prospective congregation.
On March 9, 2018, In the meeting held at the office, Mr. John Thomas, the Ad hoc Committee unanimously approved the forwarding of the application for the formation of the independent congregation as well as the renting of the auditorium of Growing Scholars Montessori School located at 13013 Fry Rd, Cypress, TX 77433 as the worship place.
On March 10, 2018, the application for the formation of the independent congregation was forwarded to the Diocesan Bishop with a list of 43 family’s consent signature and the relevant meeting minutes.
On April 6, 2018, the Diocesan Episcopa, Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos Thirumeni met with the Mar Thoma community members from Northwest Greater Houston and the surrounding area, including many of those who have already signed the consent, to discuss the formation of an independent congregation. The meeting took place at the proposed worship location of the congregation - 13013 Fry Rd, Cypress, TX 77433. After the deliberations, at the conclusion of the meeting, Thirumeni conveyed the diocese’s decision to grant permission to form an independent congregation in the Northwest Greater Houston and the surrounding area, with the name of St. Thomas Mar Thoma Congregation, Houston.
On April 11, 2018, with the Kalpana DC/268/18 announcing the formation of the congregation effective on May 15, 2018, with Rev. Abraham Varghese appointed as interim Vicar.
On May 17, 2018, in the Ad hoc committee meeting held at the residence of Mr. Prijoe Philips Komattu, presided by Rev Abraham Varghese, the committee entrusted the following members with the following functional responsibilities within the Ad Hoc committee: Mr. C. M Mathew (Vice president), Mr. John Thomas (Secretary), Mr. John Mathew (Finance trustee), Mr. Junnu Jacob Sam (Accounts trustee) and Mr. C. M Varghese (Lay leader).
On May 19, 2018, the Inaugural Holy Communion Service of St. Thomas Mar Thomas congregation was conducted. Very Rev. Dr. Cherian Thomas was the chief celebrant. Rev. Abraham Varghese, Rev. Philip Philip, and Rev. Saji Albin were also present during the Inaugural Holy Communion. A public meeting was held after the Inaugural Holy Communion Services. Very Rev. Dr. Cherian Thomas delivered the keynote speech. The officials of Immanuel Mar Thoma church and Trinity Mar Thoma Church delivered felicitations.
On July 19, 2018, with Kalpana DC/283/18 Thirumeni has appointed Rev. Philip Philip as the Vicar of the St. Thomas Mar Thoma Congregation.
On August 26, 2018, The first General Body meeting of the congregation was held and was presided by the vicar Rev. Philip Philip. The general body meeting elected the following office bearers and Auditors for the year 2018. Mr. C. M Mathew (Vice president), Mr. John Thomas (Secretary), Mr. Junnu Jacob Sam (Accountant Trustee), Mr. John Mathew (Treasurer Trustee), Mr. C. M Varghese (Lay Leader Malayalam) and Mr. Johncy John (Lay Leader English). Auditors: Mr. Joby George and Mr. Tom Joseph
On November 11th, 2018, Our Diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa visited the parish and Thirumeni conducted the Holy Communion service in English
On October 8, 2018, The Texas Secretary of State issued the Certification of Incorporation, to St. Thomas Mar Thoma congregation as a Non-profit religious corporation, under Texas law.
On October 9, 2018, The Internal Revenue Services (IRS) of the USA assigned the Tax ID (83-2147046) for St. Thomas Mar Thoma congregation.
On February 20, 2019, the IRS has approved the 501 (c) tax exemption for the congregation.
On July 25, 2019, the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Granted the Texas Franchise Tax exemption for the Congregation.
On February 10, 2019, The General Body meeting Passed the resolution to request to His Grace Mar Thoma Metropolitan and His Lordship Diocesan Episcopa for granting the Parish status for the Congregation.
On June 5, 2019, The Episcopal Synod granted parish status for the Congregation with the name St. Thomas Mar Thoma Church, Houston.
On June 20, 2019, with Kalpana DC 274/2019, Rev. Saji Albi was appointed as the Vicar.
On August 8, 2019, Church acquired the property at 19445 Cypress Church Road, Cypress, TX 77433, consisting of 4 acres of land including parsonage and a building that can be potentially converted to an interim sanctuary.
On October 26, 2019, With God’s grace, the renovation work for the sanctuary building was completed and was consecrated by His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan with Diocesan Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa. The parsonage was also dedicated the same day by His Grace the Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Mar Thoma Metropolitan.
